Ideal country for trail riding

The Salagou - Mourèze Grand Site is one of the most remarkable stretches of riding country in Languedoc. The tracks cross the red ruffes — the geological formations that give the landscape its extraordinary colour — follow the shores of the lake and wind into the fragrant garrigue of the Hérault back country.

La Bergerie du Mas Delon, on its 176-hectare estate, welcomes riders who would like to bring their horses. The animals are kept at pasture for the whole of the stay, so their owners can ride out on the surrounding trails straight from the estate.

Riding activities around the Salagou

Whether you bring your own horse or want to try riding while you're here, the Salagou has plenty to offer.

Riding through the ruffes

The tracks through the red ruffes around Lake Salagou are spectacular on horseback. The contrast between the horses' coats and the brick-red rock formations makes for unforgettable pictures. Routes range from 2 hours to a full day.

Rides around the lake

Much of the shoreline of Lake Salagou can be followed on horseback or on foot. The stretches between Celles and Les Vailhés offer views over the lake, the ruffes and the surrounding hills. A gentle ride suitable for all levels.

Guided rides: L'Attrape-Rêves

Accompanied horse rides around Lake Salagou are run by L'Attrape-Rêves, Julien and Marine's riding centre, 5 minutes from the gîtes — in Le Puech, the same village as the estate, on the road to Octon. Bookings are made directly with the riding centre, on +33 6 63 06 62 00 or at lattrapereves34.fr.

The Cirque de Mourèze on horseback

17 km from La Bergerie, the Cirque de Mourèze and its dolomite pillars make a striking setting for a trail ride. The paths around the cirque can be ridden and offer spectacular views of the rock formations.

Hiking and mountain biking

If riding isn't your thing, the same landscapes can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. Waymarked trails start from the estate and let you discover the ruffes, the lake and the garrigue at your own pace.
