Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, a village outside time
Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of the medieval jewels of the Hérault. The village grew up around Gellone Abbey, founded in the 9th century by Guilhem of Orange, a cousin of Charlemagne. For centuries it was one of the major staging posts on the Way of St James via the Arles route (Via Tolosana).
Today the village keeps its medieval character intact: cobbled lanes, golden stone houses, a central fountain, and the Romanesque abbey at the heart of the village. The setting is exceptional: the village is wedged into the Gorges de l'Hérault, between limestone cliffs and the river.
