Octon, the balcony of Lake Salagou
Perched on the heights overlooking Lake Salagou, the village of Octon is one of the best vantage points of the Grand Site Salagou - Mourèze. From the village viewpoint, the eye takes in the red ruffes — the unique geological formations that give the landscape its distinctive colour — and the blue expanse of the lake.
The village itself keeps its authentic Languedoc character: houses built of red ruffe stone, narrow lanes, a central fountain. Outside the summer weekends, the place is quiet and unspoilt. Sunset from the heights of Octon bathes the ruffes in a striking orange light.

Octon is ideal for a half-hour outing or a morning of hiking by the lake.
Hiking down to the lake
From Octon, trails lead down through the red ruffes to the shores of Lake Salagou. The walk towards the (partially drowned) village of Celles is especially picturesque, with plunging views over the geological formations.
Landscape photography
Octon is an essential photo spot on the Salagou. The contrast between the brick-red ruffes, the blue of the lake and the Mediterranean sky makes for unique compositions throughout the day. The evening golden hour is particularly spectacular from the heights.
Village of Celles
A few kilometres below, the village of Celles is the area's other emblematic site. Partially drowned when the lake was created, its Romanesque church re-emerges at low water, creating a unique sight.
Mont Liausson
From Octon you can see Mont Liausson, the highest point of the Grand Site Salagou - Mourèze. The climb offers a 360° panorama over the lake, the Cirque de Mourèze and the distant Cévennes. Accessible from the Mourèze car park or along the ridge.
Lake Salagou
4 km from the gîtes and visible from Octon, Lake Salagou offers swimming, paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking from its developed beaches. The beaches at Les Vailhés and Clermont-l'Hérault are the main swimming areas.
